Our clients have been sensitively restoring this Grade II-listed Georgian farmstead in East Devon. The project brief was to extend the house to create a magnificent family room and kitchen, overlooking the newly-created gardens to the rear. We proposed demolishing an existing, north-facing rear extension, and replacing it with a large single-storey extension, also linking the farmhouse with an adjacent C17 barn. After exploring many options with both the owners and the local Conservation Officers, an acceptable solution was devised and Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent was secured. A variety of external materials pick up the stone, brick, cob and timber facing of its surroundings. To the side, steel-framed French doors add a contemporary element while complementing the existing rear fenestration. To the rear, oversized new sash windows, echoing those of the front elevation, create long views from kitchen out into the gardens beyond.
